A significant data security incident has impacted McLaren Health Care, potentially exposing the information of approximately 743,000 patients.
The breach was discovered following unusual activity detected on the organization’s network. An investigation revealed that an unauthorized party accessed certain systems containing patient data. The incident is believed to have begun in late August but was contained and discovered in October 2023.
The sensitive information potentially affected by this breach includes patient names, Social Security numbers, dates of birth, medical record numbers, health insurance information, dates of service, diagnosis, and other clinical information. For a subset of individuals, billing information and treatment cost information may also have been involved.
McLaren Health Care has stated they are taking this matter very seriously and have implemented enhanced security measures to help prevent future incidents. They are also offering credit monitoring and identity protection services to eligible affected individuals as a precautionary measure. Notification letters are being sent directly to those whose data may have been compromised, providing details about the incident and steps they can take to protect themselves. Patients are advised to remain vigilant and review their account statements and explanations of benefits for any suspicious activity.
