Setting Up GitHub Copilot in VS Code

Getting your AI coding assistant up and running in VS Code is a straightforward process that will transform the way you write code. To begin, ensure you have Visual Studio Code installed and a valid GitHub account with an active GitHub Copilot subscription.

Once your prerequisites are met, open Visual Studio Code. Navigate to the Extensions view, typically found in the left sidebar (it looks like four squares, one flying away). In the search bar at the top of the Extensions view, type “GitHub Copilot”.

You will see the official GitHub Copilot extension listed in the search results. Make sure it’s the correct one provided by GitHub. Click the Install button next to the extension name. VS Code will download and install the extension for you.

After installation is complete, you might be prompted to sign in to GitHub if you are not already authenticated within VS Code. Follow the prompts to authorize VS Code to access your GitHub account. This step is crucial as it links your Copilot subscription to the extension.

Once signed in and the extension is active, you should see the GitHub Copilot icon (often a ghost or similar) in the status bar at the bottom of your VS Code window. This icon indicates that Copilot is active and ready to provide code suggestions. You can click this icon to toggle Copilot on or off, or access its settings.

With these steps completed, GitHub Copilot is now fully set up and integrated into your VS Code environment, ready to assist you with intelligent code completions and suggestions as you type.
